A FAITHFUL PEOPLE...

Sunday School Lesson For Nov. 22, 2009

A FAITHFUL PEOPLE -

2 Peter 1:3-15

BACKGROUND:
This is our first look at 2 Peter, and immediately it begins by dealing with our inner being. It was, in fact, that inner being that Jesus often focused on, declaring that a thought is tantamount to the act itself (cf. Matthew 5:27). So the question is, how do we keep both the inner as well as the outer being under control? The answer lies in the heart of man. It is difficult, if not impossible, to pretend on a regular basis without coming face to face with failure...

Peter knows his time is very short, and the mere listing of rules would not be sufficient to last his followers a lifetime. It was then necessary to deal not with their conduct, but with their nature. Jesus Himself pointed out that to love ones neighbor as he loves himself would result in a person keeping all the law concerning man. But this is not something that can be accomplished overnight and without effort. That is why Peter began with the words of todays lesson...

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT (2 Peter 1:3, 4)
To begin with, Peter declares that God began through the death, burial and Resurrection of His Son Jesus by supplying us with all the raw material necessary to live a Godly life. The knowledge of him amounts to faith, since to truly know Jesus is to have faith in Him. It is a fact that even Jesus disciples didnt really know Him until he had returned to Heaven. To the final moment (Acts 1) they marveled at Jesus, because they didnt know Him. Once they really knew who He was, they gladly laid down their lives for Him...

Look at some of the words of Jesus. They amount to what Peter calls precious promises (cf. John 14) that will allow us to escape worldly desires and corruption. Obviously, one who has nothing to look forward to can be drawn in by the world. Only those who are convinced (through faith) of much better things to come can resist the temptations of this earthly life...

THE ULTIMATE GOAL (2 Peter 1:5-7)
Peter is convinced that the knowledge of Jesus guarantees that we have faith. But the goal should be to love neighbor as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:39). Of course, one cannot simply will himself to love another person besides, this is not brotherly love; it is a step further: it is a Godly type love (agape), one that is not based on the performance (or lack thereof) of the other person, but is present regardless. No, brotherly love is listed just below the Godly love in verse 7...

There is, therefore, a logical sequence that must be followed in order to arrive at the love that is in verse 7 called charity. It all begins with faith, followed by (New Jerusalem Bible translation) goodness, understanding, self control, perseverance, devotion, and finally brotherly love and Godly love. Of course, there is implied in Peters writing that these traits should be sought in the sequence given, for they are like a building with a foundation, walls, supports, and a top. They all depend one on another...

THE RESULT (2 Peter 1:8-11)
Peter declares that these directives are good not only for personal perfection, but they are also effective in our being fruitful: i.e. bringing others to the Body of Christ. There is also a hint of a warning: if one does not genuinely possess the aforementioned traits, they may slip and fall spiritually. But if one is eager to adopt the instructions handed down by the apostle, entry into the Kingdom is sure...

THE IMPORTANCE OF REMINDERS (2 Peter 1:12-15)
It is not good enough to simply speak Godly truths to a person once. This because the devil is constant in his attempts to pull one away from the paths of righteousness. So if sin is at our proverbial front doors daily, so too should the Gospel of Christ be ever before us. Peter pledges (as should all of us) that so long as he lives, he will continuously remind his followers of their spiritual responsibilities...

We should do the same today....

DAVID

Forum: CHRISTIAN CORNER

Mr. Ben,

here are a couple of pictures I just pulled off the game camera after moving it over to your stand sight. I should also point out that the time on the camera is 1-hour off as I have not yet set it back....

This was when I called you the other day and asked about adding the extra 4 ft. extension to the stand...

After finding out that the stand was now too tall for the intended tree, Daniel and I had to move it about 30 feet to another (better) tree...

We finally got the stand up and the straps situated and everything anchored in place...

Here are just a few of the pictures taken -

I have yet to get a picture of the BIG BUCK that is still hanging around and nothing says that he's not 30 yards to left of your stand running the creek bottom either....

DAVID

Forum: PHOTO GALLERY

Prayers for a friend...

Here is a partial e-mail that I just received from a friend that is living over seas with his wife and daughter -

I was diagnosed with naso pharanygeal cancer in early july. This cancer is in the back of the nose and upper throat. My total treatment was a combination of chemo and radiation. I finished my treatments the 15th of October. I was a very sick person for about 15 weeks. I am in recovery now. I got through this with the help of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my wife and daughter, and many friends whose prayers helped tremendously. My docter says that I have beaten this cancer. My last MRI since my treatments ended shows no cancer left....

I would like to ask all of you to remember "Mr. George" in your prayer time and ask that God continue to Bless him and his family....

DAVID

Forum: CHRISTIAN CORNER

Good News / Bad News...

The GOOD NEWS is that we will have our new milling machine here tomorrow and the BAD NEWS is that this is going to put us at least 2-weeks behind on our work schedule. The one exception to this is trigger jobs. These we can usually turn back around in 3 days or less...

This new mill be used to cut dovetails in Encore barrels and allow the use of larger 10-32 allen head screws instead of those 8-40 slotted head forend screws that the factory offers. This will allow for a proper torque setting without having to worry about stripping out the factory barrel threads...

Something else that we have gotten lot's of calls for, is our Ruger 10/22's. These are all built with both the barrel and receiver being threaded for a more consistantly accurate rifle. Some of these rifles will also be built with the even larger 1.062" diameter SUPER BULL BARREL. I will be posting pictures of mine, that is, if I can ever get the time to work on it...

Another large number of calls that we get is for "in-line cylinder boring" - which would allow us to be able build the Ruger Bisley and Ruger Super Blachawk, chambered for cartridges like the 475 Linebaugh and 500 Linebaugh. Several other options will be available once we get all the tooling and jigs set up for the various machining operations...

Speaking of which, we are getting more and more calls for converting the H&R 45/70 into a MUZZLE LOADER. With a removable breech plug, QLA and or muzzle brake, plus trigger job and scope base/barrel modification to the larger 8-40 screws and with the proper sized bullets, these guns are more than giving the T/C Encore a run for their money...

Anything else of interest to you, just let me know....

DAVID

Forum: NEWS / INFORMATION

1 Peter 1:13-25...

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR NOVEMBER 1, 2009

1 Peter 1:13-25

BACKGROUND:

Peter writes this letter to Christian believers who have scattered for one reason or another to many parts of the known world. Particularly, Peter addresses those in regions he has personally visited. Peter begins by explaining why these Christians should feel special. First, God has purely through mercy provided a new life for all believers. That new life gives them hope through Jesus Christ, who died in their stead, rising from the dead and thereby provided a treasure that cannot and will not be spoiled by anything. That treasure will not fade away, wear out or become outdated. It is, in fact that treasure spoken of in the Old Testament time and again by the prophets. Now, those predictions have come to pass...

With that, Peter begins the words of our lesson today with the connector, Wherefore...

DEMANDS OF THE NEW LIFE (1 Peter 1:13-16)

Peter explains that there should be reaction on the parts of the recipients of these blessings by God. Christians should embrace what God has done through His Son, and make themselves ready for action. Gird up thy loins is an expression of days past that had reference to the fact that men in those days wore long robes. These garments were not designed for running, and in order to run, a man would have to gather up the low-hanging robe, tie it about his waist, leaving his feet and lets free to maneuver. But Peter is not here speaking literally of a garment, but rather the mind. He is challenging believers to remove that which would hinder the mind from doing its best work. More particularly, Peter warns against falling back into the old ways that these new converts had in their previous lives. Obviously, Satan can be expected to work diligently in that direction. The converts are not to obey the devil, but obey the Word of God...

Then comes the challenge: they are now pledged to One who is holy, and their goal should be to become holy (set apart from the world) as He is holy. Of course, this is a challenge that no human can possibly achieve, but the idea is to strive toward that goal with all ones might...

COST OF HOLINESS (1 Peter 1:17-21}

The first price tag will be to adopt the attitude that this earthly life is a kind of exile; that is, you no longer belong in this world, but you must suffer it to be so until such time as God calls you home. You must also recognize that you are being rescued from exile as a result of a special ransom paid for your release. It is a ransom more precious and more long-lasting that silver and gold. It will never spoil or fade away. This ransom, says Peter, was in place before the beginning of the world. In other words, God loved us all and arranged for our release even before we existed...

REGENERATION BY THE WORD (1 Peter 1:23-35)

All of this initiative on Gods part should cause the recipient to become a new person on the inside, There should be love for one another a love that is genuine and from the heart. It should be the same love (agape) that moved God to rescue us; it certainly had nothing to do with merit on our parts, God just loved us in spite of ourselves. Today, Christians must adopt the same attitude they must love one another friend or foe without regard to merit on the other persons part. It is this love that sets Christians apart from the world....

DAVID

Forum: CHRISTIAN CORNER

Phone Calls - LISTEN UP!

From October 1st. til today, October 30th., I have logged in 1,062 phone calls!!!

BUT, there is one problem with this. My shop is all metal construction and heavily insulated and as such, my cell phone does NOT ring in there...

If you call, please leave a message, to which I will promptly return your call. About 1 in 30 will leave a message and those calls are usually returned before the end of the day...

Only if you leave a message will I return your phone call...

Thank you for your cooperation in this rather simple matter....

DAVID

Forum: NEWS / INFORMATION

Red Dot / Muzzle Loader...

I finally got a chance to get out and sight-in my wife's muzzle loader after mounting a red dot sight on it...

With my wife being right handed and left eye dominate, a regular rifle scope was just out of the question. We looked at various red dot sights and then finally found one that had a huge 50mm lens with unlimited eye relief. Now she is in business...

I thought about various mounting locations for the red dot sight and forward out on the barrel, away from all the smoke and flash from the primer, seemed the most logical. This way, the lens would stay clean and clear and "unburnt" from the blow-back during firing. I used the rear sight screw hole as a guide and first mounting hole and then just had to drill/tap three more holes for the base. Fortunately though, the same scope base for the T/C Contender was a perfect fit as far as barrel size and contour go and the rest as they say, was history...

Sighting in was simple, with 50 yd. 3-shot groups going through the same hole and 100 yard groups running well under 2 inches...

Check this out and let me know what you think....

DAVID

Forum: MUZZLE LOADERS

Extractors for Contender barrel

David, I saw this quote on another thread. "I also put the spring loaded extractor back in place and that will allow you to be able to shoot both the rimmed 307 Winchester as well as the rimless 308 Winchester interchangably. Just load and shoot...."

Can you do this with a 6.8 barrel to allow the use of 30-30 brass AND the standard 6.8 SPC, provided that the rim recess is cut in the barrel?

Forum: T/C CONTENDERS & ENCORES

I have decided to post a few more pictures of our deer - at the request of several of you guys who emailed me about this...

This is at a new location over previously shown pictures and the deer are just now getting use to the new "feeding area"...

In looking over all my pictures that were taken just from this one spot, the Game Cam has taken well over 500 different pictures in the past 30 days!
