the stock looks/fits/feels great.    load development is at a stand still until i get my collet die.   it is just a plain old .30-06.  probably the best all around cartridge.(in my opinion)  go to any mom & pop or country store and you will find .30-06 ammo.  i've got 50 pieces of fire formed brass to start working with when the time comes.   i'm going to go with the hornady 155 amax running at 3000+-fps.    even using milsurplus ammo groups were ok.   i'm sure they will tighten up once i get my load dialed in.

2 hours at the range this morning.  still using milsurplus ammo.   not too shabby.  the bottom left is only 2 shots.  i was afraid i would pull the 3'rd   when i got home i found that my collet die has arrived    time to prep brass for reloading.   it will probably be another 2 weeks or so before i get back to the range.  looks like it is going to be a real shooter.

david,  as always your work is superb

finally got back to the range!!!   no pics but results were similar to my last outing.   it is shooting a little bit higher than it was before.  i guess because of lighter bullet and more fps.   it's about 5" high at 75yrds, so i'm guessing it should be zeroed at 500yrds +-???????  i'll have to run some numbers to see.

it's kinda neat to have everyone look and ask about "my" rifle.  it's really david's.  you get lots of compliments on your work.

Lighter weight bullets at higher velocity "usually" shoot a little higher than heavier/slower bullets from the same gun...

If your new hunting spot has areas to where you can shoot out to 500 yards, go and shoot at a measured and exact distance so that way, you will know what your gun is doing and is capable of...

Compliments are always appreciated ....

hopefully i'll get out to my new spot in the next couple of weeks.  i plan on making a "range card" like i used in the army.    known distances to objects in my field of view/shooting lane.    1 good afternoon there and i'll have it all set up.

on a side note, my .35 whelen you rebarreled still shoots like a dream

I do the same thing and laminate the "drop table" and secure it to the side of the stock for easy and fast referrences. Everything is set in YARDAGES and CLICKS and makes adjustments in the field very precise....

Glad to hear that on your 35 Whelen. That round should definantly set a deer on it's ear ....

well, her she is!   got her yesterday afternoon  around 4:30.     i ranged her at 450, oops, she was probably only 375ish.   she ran about 30 yrds, stopped and looked around and them stumbled around and fell over.

thanks david.  i've never shot that far before at game.  it really isn't hard when you know what your equipment is capable of.

John,

back in 1994, I shot my first LONG-RANGE deer at 1,243 yards and then my second one at 1,380 yards and ever since then, I have been totally ruined....

John,

do you have a safe place where you can practice shooting at the longer distances? Even being a trained SNIPER, I practiced out to 1,500 yards for 5 years before I ever put the cross hairs on a deer and after firing thousands and thousands of rounds at various distances from 600 to 1,500 yards, taking a deer at those longer ranges wasn't all that difficult...

Shooting in cross winds up to 20 mph. is relatively easy, as is shooting in the rain. The only shooting aspect I have never been able to master is reading "mirage". Good thing about deer season is that it is cooler weather and mirage is not a big problem....

i felt confidant with my shot, and probably would shoot a little farther.(750ish) if i get a  chance.    after 750yrds, i think i might want to step up in power.(.300  win/weatherby/ruam)  i still need tons of rounds down range.  all but my last deer have been shot within 100 yrds. so i've never really had to shoot "long" range.   i'm a big fan of the .45-70. i own 7.  my hunting has always gone like this......  see deer, put cross hairs on shoulder blade, drop deer.

maybe i'll get the time & money to join a club that has a 1000yrd range.  there are a couple that are within 2hours of the house.   i would love to be able to shoot that far.   although i would probably never be in a hunting situation that would require that long of a shot, it would be nice to know that i can shoot that far.    i would really like to go groundhog hunting, and try out my setup.

i am definitely not a sniper, nor claim to be even close to that skill level.
that being said, most of my rifles(all but 3) ***(.45-70's excluded)***and meant for 2 legged game
i am a firm believer in high capacity mags.

I guess I am the opposite end of the spectrum and believe in the snipers motto - ONE SHOT ONE KILL!

I have never HAD to shoot a deer at long-range but did because I had the knowledge, skill, training and equipment that allowed me the ability to do so...

About 2 months ago, I acquired a 1-mile range BUT, I will never shoot that far. When I finish my 300 Weatherby, I will shoot out to 1,500 yards but, seriously doubt I will ever shoot anything any further than that - paper targets or otherwise....
